Home Health : Arthritis

Arthritis can make even the most simple tasks painful. But, stiff, painful joints don’t have to control your life. Here are some ways to help keep your joints pain-free. All kinds of exercise like range-of-motion, aerobic, stretching, and strengthening (weight-training)are good for your joints. If you’re new to exercise, start out gently with walking, dance, cycling, or a pool-based exercise program. At work, take frequent short breaks to stretch sore joints and muscles. Park a little further from the door and walk across the parking lot. Keep body weight in check. Extra pounds can aggravate arthritis. Use hot and cold. Soak in a hot bath for up to 20 minutes, up to three times a day. Or chill a sore joint with an ice pack wrapped in a towel for up to 15 minutes, several times a day. Manage stress since it can create muscle tension and pain. For more information call 625.2000 or visit stj.com.
