Diet : Carbohydrates
It seems like everywhere you turn, you hear about low-carb diets or low-carb foods. It can be overwhelming, not to mention confusing. Here are some things to remember when you’re at the grocery store or out to eat and you’re not sure what to choose. Carbohydrates come in two basic types: simple and complex. Most of our carbs should come from complex carbohydrates, which have fiber and starch as primary ingredients. These carbs provide energy, fiber and essential vitamins and minerals. Simple carbs are generally those found in foods containing sugars and in some fruits, vegetables and their juices. With the exception of fruits and vegetables, foods high in simple carbohydrates provide less nutritional value. A low-carb diet isn’t right for everyone. It’s best to talk to your doctor about a plan that’s right for you. For more information or to find a physician, call St. John’s Referral One at 625.2000 or visit stj.com.
