Women's Health : Menopause
Women who have reached menopause know all too well the symptoms – hot flashes, night sweats and other physical complaints. But menopause doesn’t stop at physical irritations. It also affects your emotions. In one survey, 79 percent of menopausal women said they had psychological side effects, the most common being sadness, anxiety, irritability and mood swings. Some women reported they become tearful or have feelings of despair. Hormones, lack of sleep and life transitions all have an effect on your disposition. If your menopausal emotions seem to be taking over, your doctor may be able to help with medications or antidepressants. You can also try lifestyle changes such as getting regular exercise, getting more sleep, or using relaxation techniques. Join a support group to join and talk with other women dealing with the same issues. For more information, call St. John’s Referral One at 625.2000 or visit our online events calendar at stj.com.
