Home Health : Preventable Cancers

How many of us would prevent cancer if we could? Probably everyone. Well, according to the World Cancer Research Fund and the American Cancer Institute for Cancer Research, it may be possible. They concluded that if all Americans would agree to one: eat a nutritious diet, two: exercise and three: keep body fat under control, 34 percent of the most common cancers could be prevented. By making those three changes, 38 percent of breast cancer, 36 percent of lung cancer and 45 percent of colorectal cancer could be prevented. Screening is also an important tool in prevention. Especially in the case of colorectal cancer, early diagnosis is key to survival since it typically has no symptoms until it’s too late. St. John’s Mercy Regional Foundation and KOAM are offering free colorectal cancer screening kits until September 4. For more information, call St. John’s Referral One at 625.2000 or visit stj.com.
