The opportunities to eat around the holidays seem endless. Couple the abundance of in-your-face tempting food with the stress of a to-do list, and it's no wonder that we often pack on the holiday pounds. Making smart choices allows you to eat plenty of food, and not feel deprived. So here are my picks for the best and worst holiday food choices: On the good list - Pretzels, popcorn, baked chips, fresh fruits and vegetables, shrimp cocktail, clams, oysters, and  smoked salmon. On the naughty list - Chips, creamy dips, anything fried, a handful of candy or candied nuts, high-fat cheeses and crackers. And when it comes to dessert, stay away from the pecan pie, fruitcake and eggnog.

It’s no secret, people are living longer than ever, often with multiple chronic conditions like heart disease, arthritis, Alzheimer's disease and emphysema. Most of these conditions usually don't require hospitalization, but rather care at home. If you are facing a loved one who needs extra care, there is help out there for you. St. John’s Home Health program brings caregivers to you. For more info on our services and how we can help, call St. John’s Referral One at 625-2000 or log onto stj.com.
