12/1/2008 - Diet : Hazardous Foods

Food seems to be on our minds a lot more during the holiday season. But, did you know that there are some foods that not only affect our weight, but also can adversely affect other areas of our health.

St. John’s Registered Dietitian Meridith Smith has more: “Soda contains phosphoric acid, which may deplete bone and raise the risk of fractures. If you’re thirsty, it’s better to drink water, skim milk or fruit juice. Processed meats, frozen pizzas, and canned soups are loaded with sodium—a risk factor for high blood pressure. Try to choose low-sodium or no-salt varieties of these foods. You should also lower your intake of saturated fats by choosing lean meats, fresh fruits and vegetables and skinless chicken. Olive oil is another good choice – it’s low in saturated fat and may help lower heart disease risk.”
