12/18/2008 - Home Health : Itchy Winter Skin

It’s winter again, and for many people that means dry, itchy skin. If youve ever had itchy skin, you know how annoying and distracting it can be. For some, itchy skin results from a chronic skin disease called atopic dermatitis. While this condition is not curable, it can certainly be controlled. Here are suggestions to help alleviate symptoms: Shower or bathe in warm, not hot water, once a day for no more than 10 minutes. Be careful not to scrub your skin too much. Apply moisturizing creams or ointments to damp skin within three minutes after bathing. Repeat three or four times daily or whenever your skin feels dry. Bear in mind that lotions are not as effective as creams and ointments. Steer clear of soaps; laundry detergents; perfumes; and air allergens, such as pollen, pet dander, and dust mites. Avoid heat, low or high humidity, sweating, and scratchy clothing. For more information call Referral One at 625.2000 or visit stj.com.
