12/25/2008 - Holiday Health : Eating Healthy
You may be doing a lot of traveling and visiting today and in the coming weeks. But with all of those parties, holiday dinners, and long-distance trips to visit relatives, don’t forget to eat heart-smart. Dr. WC Dandridge, St. John’s Chief Medical Officer has tips that can help you enjoy the holidays without overindulging or sacrificing:
”Limit cured meat and foods packed in salty brine. Curb salty condiments, too, like horseradish, ketchup, barbecue sauce, and those with MSG. Instead, enhance foods with herbs, spices, lemon, lime, vinegar, and salt-free seasoning blends. Make sure you pack healthy snacks—like low-fat cheese sticks and whole-grain crackers, or yogurt and a piece of fruit – to keep your energy up and your mood jolly. Be a health-conscious host by serving nutritious treats such as popcorn or nuts like almonds, walnuts, and pecans.”
