St. John's Health MinuteIf you’re looking for a good healthy snack, reach for almonds. Crunchy, handy almonds are popping up in more breakfast, snack, and salad products as research continues to show their healthful qualities. So, when you're perusing the supermarket aisles during American Heart Month consider these three reasons almonds fit the bill as a perfect nutritional "boost" to meals and snacks:

#1 - almonds can lower cholesterol. Almonds are one of the most heart-healthy foods around.

#2 - almonds are nutritionally dense. A handful of almonds has 164-calories and is an excellent source of vitamin E and magnesium, and a good source of fiber.

#3 - eating almonds may help maintain or even lose weight by satisfying your appetite.

Here’s some bad news for soda drinkers. Researchers have found a connection between caffeinated colas and high blood pressure. And the link is still there even with diet cola’s. If you’re concerned about your blood pressure, stop by St. John’s Health Connection at Northpark Mall. You can get a free blood pressure check, every Wednesday between 7:30 and 10. For more info, call St. John’s Referral One at 625-2000 or log onto stj.com.
