Heart Health : Prevent Heart Disease

Can your current fitness level predict your risk for future heart disease? Researchers in one large study found the risk for heart disease went down with higher levels of fitness. Those with a low fitness level had about a 45 percent higher risk for heart disease than those with a moderate or high fitness level. Men and women in the moderate fitness group were able to walk four and three miles per hour, respectively. The American Heart Association and American College of Sports Medicine recommend that healthy adults age 18 – 65 should get at least 30 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise five days each week OR at least 20 minutes of vigorous aerobic exercise three days each week. Be sure and talk to your doctor about an exercise program that’s right for you.
