St. John's Health MinuteIt’s the start of the new year, so what is your new year’s resolution? The same as last year and the year before…exercise more and watch what you eat? You’re not the only one who makes this yearly resolution and by February you’ve already given up. So what do you do to make it work this year? Experts say for starters, make your new years resolution realistic. Don’t say you're going to lose 20 pounds; just start with 5, then you can always modify it when you reach that goal. Start with walking for 20-30 minutes a day and every month increase your time and intensity. There is no rule book for resolutions, so don’t feel you have to tackle it in the first month or first week. You’ll burn out before you ever get started.

As for the rest of you who put your health at the bottom of your list, you may want to re-consider. After all, Americans are fat and if you let the extra 7 pounds you gained over the holidays stay around your belly, it is just a matter of time before you are staring at a different person in the mirror. So make this year different. Maybe all you need to do is schedule an appointment with your family doctor. Just a check up to make sure you’re eating right and getting enough vitamins in your diet, especially as you age.
