Dieting is not advised for children, but parents can help children set good habits that will help keep them fit. Try eating meals together as a family with a variety of healthy foods on the table. Don’t force kids to participate in organized sports, but encourage physical activity like riding bikes, hoops, or even an old game of tag.
Encourage them to reach for water first when they’re thirsty. Even fruit juices add extra calories. And remember to pay attention to your child’s weight as he or she grows and talk to your pediatrician if you suspect a weight problem. Did you make a new year’s resolution to give back to the community? Well then, St. John’s has the thing for you. We are always looking for individuals to volunteer in areas from our ER to the gift shop. You pick the time that works for you and how much time you want to give. Just think, you could be helping others throughout the entire year, not just around the holidays. For more information about our volunteer program, call St. John’s Referral One at 625-2000 or log onto stj.com.
