Have you heard the phrase, ''garbage in -- garbage out?'' It was coined in reference to computer programming, but it works for the human body, too. Eat garbage (that is, junk food) and don't be surprised if your body feels like junk, too. Researchers say sweets, chips, and sugary sodas account for nearly one-third of the calories consumed by Americans. So should we ban junk foods from our diet? A little junk food can fit into a healthy lifestyle. The general suggestion is that no more than 10% of our calories should come from added sugars. So someone taking in 1,800 calories a day should get no more than 180 calories a day from added sugars.
There’s no denying it, Americans are fat and it‘s time to do something about it. If you want to learn more about your risks, mark this on your calendar. St. John’s will be holding a health talk to discuss obesity this coming Tuesday, July 10th at 5:30 p.m. The talk will be held at our Health Connection location inside Northpark Mall. Registration is required, so call St. John`s Referral One at 625-2000 or log onto stj.com.
