Medicine : Hyperbaric Medicine
If you’ve ever had a sore that just won’t heal, you know the discomfort it can cause. But for some people, open wounds can be life-threatening because they won’t heal. People with diabetes or those who experience tissue damage from certain types of cancer treatment often face issues of open wounds that just won’t heal. So, what’s the answer? For some, hyperbaric oxygen therapy may do the trick. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a form of treatment where patients with wounds that won’t heal can go into a sealed chamber with pure oxygen. The chamber is pressurized at about 1 ½ to 3 times normal atmospheric pressure, where the patient remains for anywhere from 30 minutes up to two hours. If hyperbaric medicine sounds like something only offered in big cities, think again. St. John’s Center for Wound Care offers this specialized treatment.
