Home Health : Macular Degeneration
Age related macular degeneration or AMD is the leading cause of blindness in Americans ages 60 and older. But a new study suggests that limiting sun exposure and eating foods high in antioxidants might help lower risks. In a study of almost 5000 adults, a link between sunlight exposure and AMD risk was found among older adults with a low level of antioxidants. In fact, their risk was up to four times higher. To help lower your risk, protect your eyes outdoors by wearing a hat and sunglasses, and follow the recommended dietary intakes for antioxidants such as vitamin c and zinc. To learn more about macular degeneration, plan on attending Health Connection’s free health talk on the disease. The talk will be held in the St. John’s Mercy Conference Center on August 12.
