Diet : Vitamin B12
If you take vitamin B12, you may be improving your brain health. In one study, researchers measured the amount of B12 in the blood of more than 100 healthy adults over age 60. The group also underwent a brain scan to measure brain volume. The scan was then repeated every year for five years. The reason for assessing brain volume was because brain atrophy has been linked with Alzheimer’s disease. Compared with those with higher levels of B12, those with levels in the lowest third had a sixfold higher risk for the greatest brain volume loss. If you don’t already take a supplement of vitamin B12 and wonder other ways to get the vitamin, good sources include poultry eggs, salmon and fortified breakfast cereals. As with any supplement, you should check with your doctor about a plan that’s right for you. For more information call St. John’s Referral One at 625.2000 or visit stj.com.
