You’ve heard of the Atkins diet and there are other low-carb diets out there. So what’s up with them? We all know high-protein is emerging as the latest buzz in weight control. That's because emerging research has hinted that protein may be able to satisfy hunger better than either fats or carbohydrates. Researchers don't understand exactly how protein works to turn down the appetite. But one thing is for sure….doctors know that we need protein at all stages of life, for a variety of bodily functions. It's needed for growth, development, and immunity to fight off infections and protect the body.

And don’t forget calcium. Osteoporosis causes more than one and a half million fractures every year. If you're a woman older than 50, you have 50-50 odds of having an osteoporosis-related fracture sometime in your remaining lifetime (and guys aren’t out of the equation,  your chance of a similar fracture is one in four). Doctors agree there needs to be more eduation out there so St. John’s is here to help. Have your bone density tested to find out if you are at risk of developing osteoporosis. St. John’s is offering FREE bone density screenings every Wednesday in June from 7:30 to 10:00 in the morning at our Health Connection location inside Northpark Mall. Registration is required, so call St. John’s Referral One at 625-2000 or log onto stj.com
