Home Health : Neck Pain

Neck pain is a common problem among many of us. Whether your pain results from too many hours in front of the computer or too long behind the wheel of a car, there are some self-help measures you can try. Take aspirin or ibuprofen. Apply ice to the painful area for the first 48 to 72 hours, then use heat after that or alternate hot and cold compresses. A hot shower or heating pad may also provide some comfort. Have someone gently massage the sore or painful area. Gently stretch the neck muscles up and down, side to side and from ear to ear. Finally, try sleeping on a firm mattress without a pillow or with a special neck pillow. If the pain doesn’t go away after a week, it’s time to call your doctor.
