Home Health : Expiration Dates
How long do you keep the same toothbrush? How about that mascara? We spend a lot of time checking out the expiration date on food and beverages, but not all household items have expiration dates. But, that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t. Some items around the house can harbor infection-causing bugs. Here are some to remember: Replace kitchen sponges every few weeks and wash them out weekly in hot water or the dishwasher. You can even zap the sponge in the microwave every evening for 30 seconds to kill germs. Buy a new toothbrush every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles appear worn. Replace mascara every three months. If you have pink eye, toss any eye makeup you’ve been using. Get rid of other cosmetics if the smell or color changes.
