Diet : Macular Degeneration
If you want to head off age-related macular degeneration, or AMD, it may be as easy as changing your diet. AMD is a disease that involves progressive loss of central vision. In order to lower your risk for AMD, you should skip the steak and choose chicken at meal time. One study following adults who were age 58 to 69 at the start of the four year study found that subjects who ate red meat at least 10 times weekly had an increased chance of developing early AMD compared to those who ate read meat less than 5 times a week. And, subjects who ate chicken at least 3 times a week had a reduced risk for developing late AMD compared to those who ate chicken less than once a week. St. John’s Health Connection offers health talks on macular degeneration and various other screenings. For more information call Referral One at 625.2000 or visit stj.com.
