Home Health : Heat & Blood Pressure
When was the last time you had muscle cramps? Did you know that muscle cramps can be the first sign of a heat-related illness? This time of year can pose many health risks and a variety of heat-related conditions, especially when temperatures near or go above the 100 degree mark. If you are outdoors and begin to feel crampy, like in your thighs, shoulders or back, don’t discount the condition. It may be the start of a heat-related illness. You should take a break. Find a shady spot and rehydrate yourself with water or a sports drink with electrolytes. If skin no longer feels sweaty and feels hot to the touch, or if someone becomes confused or agitated, it’s time to seek immediate medical attention. Remember that kids and older adults are at greater risk for suffering heat-related illnesses. For more information call St. John’s Referral One at 625.2000 or visit stj.com.
