Public Health : Swine Flu
You’ve probably heard a lot about swine flu lately and may have some questions about what it is or isn’t. According to the Centers for Disease Control, swine flu is thought to be spread the same way that seasonal flu spreads, which happens through sneezing or coughing or touching something with the flu virus on it. The question has also been asked if infection can occur by eating or preparing pork. The CDC says no. It reports that this virus is not spread by food and eating properly handled and cooked pork products is safe. Since there is no vaccine for swine flu, it’s important to protect yourself against germs that spread illnesses like swine flu. Cover your mouth when you sneeze or cough. Keep your hands clean. Try to avoid people who are sick. For more information, call St. John’s Referral One at 625.2000 or log on to stj.com.
