If you’ve ever dieted then you’ve probably heard these rules before. Don't eat before bedtime or you'll gain weight. Skipping meals will help you take off the pounds. If you want to stay on a diet, eat at the same time every day. Experts say these are among dozens of silly food 'rules' we often try to follow, but we really should ignore. For example, it's the total calories you consume over a 24-hour period -- and more often, over a week -- that is what causes you to gain weight, so if you want to eat before bed, go ahead, just watch the calorie count. And eat when you're hungry, not when the clock says it's time to eat.
If you’re like me, you’re busy and find it hard to get even an extra hour in the day. Between taking the kids to school, work and errands, we are pushing the limit. However, if you find an hour or two a week to spare, consider this. There is a job out there that rewards you, in experiences. Volunteers at St. John’s work all over the hospital, from the gift shop to the ER. For more information about becoming a volunteer, contact St. John’s Referral One at 625-2000 or log onto stj.com.
