St. John's Health MinuteSince fall is here, you’ll be seeing more of the color orange around. Just make sure you don’t forget to put it on your dinner table as well. The bright orange color of pumpkin, sweet potato and winter squash is a sign that these foods contain high levels of beta-carotene, a precursor of vitamin A and a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory substance. Studies have indicated that persons eating a diet rich in beta-carotene have a reduced risk of heart disease, some cancers and degenerative diseases such as arthritis. So be sure to put the pumpkins out on the porch, and save some to include with dinner as well.

St. John’s is still seeing pink this month in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness. Here’s another friendly reminder to schedule your mammogram if you haven’t done so. And if you want to show your support, stop by St. John’s on Friday and purchase a ribbon for our pink ribbon tree. It’s filling up with the names of survivors and friends to show just how many people are affected by breast cancer. Each ribbon costs just a dollar and the proceeds go to help women in the four states who can’t afford to pay for a mammogram. For more information, call St. John’s Referral One at 625-2000 or log onto stj.com.
