10/28/2008 - Home Health : Sugar

Well, Halloween is just around the corner and you know what that means… lots of sugar. St. John’s Internal Medicine Physician, Dr. Dewey Ballard is here to give us some tips:

“There’s nothing wrong with a little bit of sugar, but eating a lot of it can cause problems. If you fill up on sugar-rich foods, you’ll crowd out healthier foods, such as fruits and vegetables. You can limit major sources of sugar by limiting non-diet soft drinks; cookies, pies and cake; candy; and fruit drinks with added sugar. Added sugars go by different names. Ones to watch nutrition labels for are: corn syrup; dextrose; fructose, glucose, lactose, maltose, syrup, fruit juice concentrate and table sugar. If a food or beverage has a lot of added sugar, you’ll find one of these names listed as the first or second ingredient.”
