Bone thinning occurs as part of the natural process of aging. If the thinning continues, you could develop osteoporosis. However, it’s considered a preventable disease. That’s because you can slow bone loss and possibly prevent osteoporosis by eating a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D. Getting enough is especially critical for women in the first few years after menopause, when bone mass is lost more rapidly. Believe it or not, most Americans get only half the calcium they need from their diet. To get more, you can take calcium and vitamin D supplements. Just remember, the body needs vitamin D to absorb calcium. And the foods with the highest amounts of calcium include dairy products such as milk or yogurt, fortified orange juice, and many vegetables.
