We’ve all heard of the 5 second rule. You know when you drop that cookie on the floor, and pick it up within 5 seconds and eat it. The question, is it safe? Well, believe it or not, there have been several studies on the matter and most agree. If the food is moist, like that juicy piece of steak or fruit, you should NOT eat it. But what about that cookie or a piece of candy? Researchers say if it's dry food, then we're just talking about filth, like hair or whatever is on the soles of shoes. Most say, at least, wash it first. Bacteria are all over the place, and 10 types, including E. coli, cause foodborne illnesses, such as fever, diarrheadiarrhea, and flu flu-like symptoms.
The incidence of breast cancer has been rising steadily since 1987, in part because of improved detection. Women over 40 are encouraged to get a mammogram every year to help with early detection. When breast cancer is identified in the early stages through mammography and breast self exams, 98 percent of patients survive at least five years–and usually much longer. For more information on all of our cancer programs contact St. John’s Referral One at 625-2000 or log onto stj.com.
