October will be here before you know it. But women don’t need to wait until then to get their mammogram. Now is the time to call and schedule an appointment. Doctors admit, mammograms aren't perfect, but they're still the best tool we have for detecting breast cancer in its early -- and most curable and treatable -- stages. As for those who have an excuse for everything, you can’t use the excuse that you can’t afford it. That’s because many health care centers, including St. John’s offer free or low-cost mammograms to women who can't afford them or do not have health insurance.

Here’s a staggering statistic. Strokes strike close to 700,000 Americans each year. And here’s the shocker. The financial cost of strokes in the U.S. will soar to more than $2.2 trillion over the next 45 years if no action is taken to improve preventive care or treatment. You can learn more about your risks for a stroke by calling St. John’s Referral One at 625-2000 or log onto stj.com.
